Become a First Friend!

Become a “first friend” at Vanderbilt University! Hundreds of new international students, including many with families, are arriving in the Nashville area in July and August who would like to have an American friend. You may be that Christian friend! You and your family will join your student about once a month for a meal or a trip to shopping, church, sports, or school events (whatever is of mutual interest) so he or she may learn first-hand about American culture from you, their Christian friends. This is a wonderful local missions opportunity to love and care for someone far from home.

Many graduate students, visiting scholars, and researchers at Vanderbilt University never get the chance to visit an American home. If you would open your home to them and prepare an American meal, Vanderbilt and InterFACE Ministries offer you the opportunity through EAT (Experience American Tastes). This is a wonderful local missions opportunity to show hospitality to someone far from home. You may choose one, two, or three Sunday nights, September 29, October 20, or November 17.

We need to hear from you in just the next few weeks so a timely match may be made with your student! Vanderbilt “First Friends” orientations are either August 27 or September 10, and the Match Day Picnic will be Sunday afternoon, September 15. Limited numbers of Belmont, TSU, or MTSU internationals are also available, if you would prefer.

If you need more information before making a decision, the Missions Committee is sponsoring an informational meeting Wednesday, August 14, at 5:30 p.m. in Room 150. Come with questions and suggestions. We’ll finish in time for prayer meeting.
