2010 Habitat for Humanity Build

On October 2 and 3, First Baptist Nashville partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a deserving family in the community. Below is the family's story:

Kabura Amos & Neema Estelin

Amos and Estelin were both born and raised in refugee camps in Tanzania. They grew up working on small plantation farms until their early adulthood when they were able to resettle in the United States to start a new life. Amos says both of their parents have been refugees for so many years with no hope of making it back to Burundi where they were from originally. Today, both Amos and Estelin's parents live in Nashville, and Estelin's parents are also building a Habitat home soon with her younger siblings in Park Preserve.

Amos and Estelin are the proud parents of two children, son Charles (6) and daughter Olestina (3). They are expecting their third child in September. Charles attends Charlotte Park Elementary School, and Olestina attends Nations Ministry Center preschool. Amos and Estelin both work for Freshpoint Tomato.

The family currently lives in a two bedroom apartment in the Richland Hills apartment complex. Their air conditioner seldom works, and there is mold and mildew around all the windows. Amos would like for his son and daughter to have separate rooms as they grow older, and he would also like for them to have a place to play outside.

Amos says his father is his biggest inspiration because he always told him when he was young "that no matter what happens, courage and belief in yourself is the key to getting things done." Amos says that once he got the call that he and his family were accepted into the Habitat program that "We started getting more organized to face the new challenges that this homeownership program was sure to bring."

As far as the future goes, Amos and Estelin say "it is hard to predict what the future will bring for us, but we are true believers and being in a new house will be a good start for our new life. We are committed to overcome all new challenges...thank you!"
