Craft Your Christmas! Wrap Up

Here's what a few participants have to say:

The memory stepping stone class was a great way to try something new and
have expert guidance and assistance. I loved spending the time with people I
hadn't met before and taking home a finished product that looks great. I
wish I could have done all the classes and that we could have classes all
Year! - Linda Magill

The jewelry making class was so much fun. I learned a new craft and it
was wonderful getting to know other members of our church in a fun and
informal situation. - Debbie Thurman

Two things I've always wanted to learn how to do - create a garden stepping
stone and beading. I took Joyce's jewelry making class and Debbie's memory
stone class and love what I made. Now I can dig into my old jewelry and
finally have the know-how to remake some old favorite but broken pieces.
Every time I wear my necklace I get compliments, and Debbie and I will get
together and design a memory stone to put in the church's atrium. - Dody Howard

Craft Your Christmas! classes have wrapped up and participants are thrilled with their new-found or rediscovered talents. New friends have been met and old friends have shared hysterical and ah-HA moments together. The picture of the masked lovelies mixing mud in the back of a pick-up truck gives you some of the flavor and variety these classes have provided.

Registration for 2009 will be October 11 and 18. You can always call Margi at 664-6050 for information.

We hope you'll join us next year!

Another testimony

"Since I'm now somewhat of an experienced bead jewelry maker, the class this year for me was more about forming bonds "around" an activity that several of us enjoy. I even got to know one of my own fellow Sunday School class members whom I didn't know very well!

When I finished my project, I jumped in and helped others as they tried the new techniques Joyce Lowry was introducing that day. It was my first time to "teach" beadworking, and I loved it! I hope Margi will put me in the slate of teachers for next fall.

Joyce did an excellent job of creating the jewelry designs, testing the materials, organizing our supplies, and guiding us as we crafted. She is a wonder and a good crafting mentor!!

I'm so glad that First Baptist offers classes like these -- not only to have fun doing a hobby I like but also to have a chance to make new friends, get to know other FBCers, and hopefully plant (or water) some gospel seeds!

Forming groups based on shared interests is a key way that First Baptist can "build bridges" in our community. I'm looking forward to seeing what our church will do to expand our interest-group offerings in the future." - Andrea Hultman

Nashville Christmas Parade

In recent years the annual Christmas parade downtown has become more and more popular with organizations sponsoring entries and people crowding the streets. Our church has been increasingly active in establishing a presence along the Broadway parade route, but last year we sponsored, built and manned a float! We had a simple, beautiful manger scene with carolers onboard and shepherds moving alongside giving out copies of our Advent book. Those attending the parade loved both the float and the books. Of all the floats, ours with a nativity and Christian carols was the only purely Christian float in the parade.

We are planning a similar entry this year but larger and with more singers, better sound, and better lighting. And we will still have 20 shepherds alongside! We will provide hot chocolate to the crowds gathered near the church and talk with anyone who is interested about our church and our Lord. It will be dark, it may be cold, and it will be crowded, but we hope you will catch the spirit of this endeavor and see the opportunity to be a major player in a popular downtown activity and touch the lives of many people. If you are interest in helping build the float, email sam.sanders@firstbaptistnashville.org.

The parade begins at 7:00 P.M. on Friday, December 5,
at the corner of Broadway and Seventh Avenue South.

Frank and to the Point

This Sunday (November 23) we will celebrate the Lord's Supper in our morning worship service. The Lord's Supper (sometimes called Communion) is a special time of worship when the believer focuses attention on the gift of Christ's sacrifice. Were it not for what Jesus did for us in offering His body and blood to bring us into relationship with God, we would be people of no hope. I invite you to join us Sunday for this significant remembrance.

Then on Monday (November 24) we will gather at noon for our annual Thanksgiving Luncheon. We share this time with our Thursday Business Lunch friends each year. Good music, plenty of delicious food, and a time to reflect on the blessings of God make this a wonderful way to begin the holiday season. Reservations are not necessary this year, so make plans to join us!

After Thanksgiving we step into the season of Advent. From the Hanging of the Green to our two Christmas Eve services, no one celebrates Advent quite the way First Baptist Nashville does. We'll enjoy some of the best music of the season in our worship services, help those who've experienced a life loss with our Service of Remembrance and Hope, host TubaChristmas, participate in the Nashville Christmas Parade, and of course look forward to the Carol-Candlelight service. Our theme for Advent 2008, The Word Became Flesh, serves to remind us not only of the incarnation where God became man, but also of our privilege to be incarnational in our ministry. We are downtown for a purpose. From here we can touch the world, but right here, we can touch Nashville and show them Christ's love like no one else.

Be sure to pick up an Advent Devotional Guide and plan now to make what happens in your church a priority in the weeks ahead. I'm certainly looking forward to celebrating Advent with you. It is one of my spiritual highpoints each year and reminds me of how blessed I am to be your pastor.

Fellowship Hall has new carpet, is freshly painted, and has improved audiovisual and sound capabilities. The new serving line outside the kitchen gives us better equipment and more menu options. Room 150 now has a "conference center" look and provides a glimpse into our church's history.

In addition, we are finishing updates to several other areas including Room 360 and restrooms on the third floor of the south building.
Marriage Is Work

Christ said, "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate" (Matthew 19:5-6). Most couples marry with abundant thoughts and feelings of joy, peace, faith, and love. Despite that, current research indicates:

51% of all marriages in the United States end in divorce.

50% of divorces occur in the first seven years.

80% of divorced couples say their marriage failed because they grew apart, lost a sense of closeness, and did not feel loved and appreciated.

The birth of the first child is one of the major causes of marital dissatisfaction.

Finances, children, employment, in-laws, religion, communication, and trust are vital components of most marriages and are often the primary stressors that can lead to marital dissatisfaction.

It is painfully obvious and simply clear that most marriages are not good and not what God intended. Wait! Before you cancel your wedding plans or give up, here is the good news: If Christ is at the center of your marriage, great things can and will happen! Philippians 4:13 reads, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Also, for all the alarming research, other studies show that marriages built on deep friendship, mutual respect, and the sincere enjoyment of each other's company are likely to succeed, prosper and last till "death do us part." You can have a great marriage by putting Christ first, being faithful in prayer and staying close friends with your spouse.

Larry and Pam Swift have served as the teachers for our Single Professionals Sunday School class for over eleven years. They have ministered through Bible teaching, caregiving, love, outreach and leadership. Larry told me it has been a rich ministry for both he and Pam and that their lives have been blessed over and over by the Bible study discipline, by the various class members and their gifts, and by the Lord as He has led, guided, and smiled upon their class. Larry is known for his excellent Bible lessons resulting from hours of study and preparation. He loves the Word of God and loves to share insights and riches of God's Word. We'll miss the Swifts in our single adult area but will be excited to see what new ministry roles the Lord has for Larry and Pam in the church.

Miley Cyrus Outreach Photos

Thanks for your help in pulling together the Wednesday AM outreach in connection with the Good Morning America/Miley Cyrus event.

30 brave souls in the FBN family showed at 5:30 A.M. and worked till 8 A.M. - wow, imagine! They did an incredible job! There was no rain, but no sun and we distributed 480 donuts. We set up stations at the patio with a super sign on sidewalk, and at staff garage sidewalk - and a mobile group - each team of about 10, with donuts in baskets, hot chocolate, hot coffee, flyers to give away and a big smile with a red FBN t-shirt identifying each.

It was worthwhile and good - and our members were able to meet people, give a tangible signal of care/love, and encourage others toward Christ.

Thanks for what every one of you may have done to help out, it was great!

Click here to view photos (graciously provided by our own Charlie Doggett!)
