Fox Hunting

In Song of Songs 2:15, one of the newlyweds encourages the other to "Catch the foxes for us--the little foxes that ruin the vineyards--for our vineyards are in bloom." In other words, this couple understood that some forces would try to break through and destroy their marriage. These "foxes" might have seemed small, but they could be incredibly dangerous if no one dealt with them.

Even Christian couples face foxes these days--things that might seem minor at first, but can wreak havoc on marriages and families if not addressed. While the list may vary from couple to couple, here are four common "foxes" that ruin many vineyards.

  1. Over-scheduling: Crowding too much into a schedule can overwhelm a couple or a family. Be discerning about what's really important.
  2. Forgetting Who's Boss: In an effort to please others--including children and extended family--many couples abandon their responsibility to maintain a sensible balance in the family. Set proper boundaries for your time, and learn to say "no" when necessary.
  3. Lack of Communication: Many couples don't communicate well, while others won't communicate at all. Either way, the results are unhealthy. Maintain healthy lines of communication, making sure that the messages are both sent and received in a gentle, Christ-honoring manner.
  4. Selfishness: Everyone tends to want his or her own way. That's our natural inclination, but a supernatural response requires sacrificing for others. That can be tricky in a family, but the result of selfishness in one family member tends to be a selfish response from others.
