Veterans Day Program
On July 16, 1945, the USS Indianapolis departed from San Francisco to Tinian Island with a top-secret cargo. Traveling unescorted midway between Guam and Leyte, at fourteen minutes past midnight on July 30, 1945, she was hit by two torpedoes from a Japanese submarine, sending her to a watery grave in twelve minutes. Of the 1,196 men aboard, about 900 sailors and Marines entered the shark-infested water. No one was aware of their plight. Five horrifying days later, 317 men remained who had survived the terror.
Mr. Edgar Harrell was a Marine assigned to the USS Indianapolis and is a survivor. At 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 11, at First Baptist Nashville, Mr. Harrell will tell the inspiring story of how he survived and was rescued. It is a powerful story of God's sustaining presence in difficult times. We invite you to come and hear his story! There will be a reception following where you may talk with him.
