Instilling Christian Leadership Qualities in Your Children

Parents have a tremendous responsibility to equip their children for leadership and Christian service. How?

Be an example. Parents' actions reflect their values and priorities more than their words do. If you are regular in church attendance and faithful in carrying out your commitments there, your child will understand the importance of participating consistently in Bible study and worship and being active in Christian service.

Practice and teach integrity. If you receive too much change from a purchase at a store, return it without hesitation and explain to your child why you did. There is no more important trait of Christian leadership than honesty.

Give children tasks and require them to complete their projects well and on schedule. This helps children develop the trait of responsibility and helps them understand that there are some things in life that have to be done, even though they may not be fun.

Love your children unconditionally. You loved them before they could do anything, and that should continue throughout their lives. While loving them unconditionally, expect them to do their best in school, sports, and other extra-curricular activities. Mediocrity seldom produces leaders.

There can be no leaders without followers. Children need to be shown by your actions and words to respect and care about others around them. Practice the Golden Rule.

Continue to develop spiritually, mentally, and physically and encourage your children to do the same. Effective leaders in church and elsewhere do not reach a point where they stop growing. Have family devotionals and encourage your child's questions, comments and prayers.
