Influencing the Grandchildren

Family Connections

When my children were small, my dad lived far from us in western Oklahoma on a farm. During the summer, our children spent extended time with my dad on the farm. There they learned the value of hard work which has influenced them even in their adult years. When the work day was finished, Dad got out his fiddle while supper was being prepared and played his music to help him relax. My children would run to sit around him as he played. They also learned the value of music. After supper the children helped clean the dishes, learning that even the smallest had jobs to do. Afterward, everybody gathered around the table for an evening of game playing and family together time. They learned a lot from their Pap Paw.

The pendulum has swung and it's now our time to be the grandparents. Lynn and I were present at the hospital when each one was born. We are fortunate to have three grandchildren right here in Middle Tennessee. They know that we are always here and available to them when they need us. Children are like sponges and soak up what they are around so, as grandparents, it is extremely important that our lives reflect what we want them to learn. Share with them the importance of loving God and people and living their lives in such a way that they are God's witness to their friends. Instill in them the importance of family time, respect for their parents, the value of keeping their word, listening as well as talking. Help them understand that learning is fun as well as important.

Being a good grandparent is not only a joy but a responsibility. We are thankful for our grandchildren and hope to influence them in a positive way for Christ.
