by Dr. Frank Lewis, senior pastor
I've always assumed that the church was important. My parents took me to church before I had a choice in the matter. As a young teen I still attended (thanks to my parents) even though my mind and heart were often elsewhere. Once I became a follower of Jesus Christ I never questioned the role of the church nor its importance. The church is the Bride of Christ and one day Christ is coming back for His church. Much of the New Testament was written in letter form to churches.
The church does what Christ would do in the community if he were physically present. Followers of Christ need the church as a place where they can be encouraged to grow in Christlikeness. The church needs followers who are dedicated and committed to the mission and values of the church. Even though it might not realize it, the community needs the church too. Our prophetic witness and redemptive presence makes the community a better place.
In a recent discussion with new members at First Baptist Nashville, I shared five secrets to getting the most out of your church membership. Don't share this with anyone, but I want you to be in on the secret too! Your church membership will be more important to you when you ...
1. Get involved, and stay involved. (The ministry of showing up.)
2. Join a Sunday School Class. (The ministry of belonging.)
3. Find a place of service. (The ministry of helping.)
4. Practice being generous. (The ministry of giving.)
5. Influence and Invite. (The ministry of making a difference.)
In this issue of The Evangel you will find several ways to get involved and serve, along with opportunities to give and invite. I can't tell you how much you are appreciated for being a part of the family at First Baptist Nashville. Our mission has never mattered as much as it does today and with your partnership in the gospel we've got great days ahead of us as a church family.
I'm glad to be your Pastor.
