Extending our Reach
PUBLISHED IN THE EVANGEL // January 28, 2008by Tom Scudder, FBC member
A few years back Donna and I were directing the Adult 2A Sunday School department and wanted to provide an opportunity for increased involvement in local missions for our members and their families. At that time, Tambi Swiney's class was providing and serving dinner once a month at the Safe Haven Family Shelter. We asked about expanding the ministry to the entire department, and they graciously agreed. That's how my family and our Sunday School department got started -- but it's not why.
Faith needs to be lived out by helping others who are in real need. Serving dinner at Safe Haven is an easy way for our family to help other families and to let them know that God cares about them. Jesus said that whenever you have ministered to the least of these you have done it to me. When we reach out to the families temporarily living at the homeless shelter, we are obedient to Christ, and we show the people in the shelter the loving face of God.
A more selfish reason for our involvement is the opportunity it provides for us to teach our children something that cannot be learned in Sunday School, personal Bible study, or even a sermon during worship. It's something learned only by doing. We want to show Katherine and Caroline that obediently living out their faith in Jesus is about "helping others in Jesus name."
