Now Entering the Construction Zone
PUBLISHED IN THE EVANGEL // June 5, 2007by Kim Williams, Building Bridges Steering Team chair
While our Task Forces are working hard on future plans, I’ve been mulling over some thoughts about two different kinds of bridge building. There is “big idea” bridge building that requires a huge, collaborative group effort, and then there’s “one person connecting to another person” bridge building. You know, where I remember that every time I leave my house, I’m actually entering the “bridge construction zone.”
I’m excited about what’s coming for our congregation in the “big idea” category, but I’ve also felt challenged recently to think about what I can do as just one person. There are good things I know to do but don’t, unless I focus and choose very deliberately to be obedient to God’s direction.
Here are some ideas for one on one connecting that are “tried and true.” I hope they never become “tired and trivial” for us as followers of Jesus.
PRAY: I can offer to pray for others and ask them if there is anything I can pray about specifically, something concerning them today. And then be faithful to pray.
LISTEN: I can ask God to help me not be so busy with my “busy-ness” that I don’t even see the opportunity He gives me to be a good listener for a co-worker, a neighbor or a friend.
CARE: I can take a plate of brownies, buy a cup of coffee, send an encouraging note, or offer to baby-sit. I can look for ways to demonstrate God’s love tangibly to someone who isn’t that sure He really does love them. Sometimes a small impulse to do something is actually a big nudge from God to build a bridge.
I’m also mulling over this thought: maybe the biggest “big idea” bridge building of all is when each of us prays, listens and cares every time we enter the “bridge construction zone.” I think we usually call that the mission field…and it’s all around us.
