I See Rainbows – A Father’s Day
PUBLISHED IN THE EVANGEL // June 5, 2007by Mark Brown, FBC member
When you look at your children what do you see?
More often than not, I see cooing smiles, laughter, curiosity, amazement, and joy. I also see determination, perseverance, energy and hope.
The other day, my wife Rachel asked me whether I’d seen the magnificent double rainbow outside on my way home. I admitted I hadn’t, but quickly added, “I definitely saw all the storm clouds.” I’m going to do my best to improve my vision while raising our children.
We have two children: Kaitlyn Renée (8 mos.) and Andrew Caleb (3 yrs.). Candidly biased and proud, I believe both are extremely energetic and bright. As gifted as they are, they challenge us daily, too. As I think about this first Father’s Day with my baby girl, I’m reminded how much we depend on God’s guidance to protect and guide her now and throughout life. We often pray for her to be “wise, strong, and pure” and even now are starting to dream of and pray for her soul mate...just as we do for her big brother, Andrew.
So what will my children mirror as they grow older? I have renewed hope when I see Kaitlyn’s smile and steely gray-blue eyes. I know God honors our choice as a family to focus on His wonderful gifts instead of the storm clouds of life that might threaten our household. Our house will be one where we cherish our family, our church, God’s Word, and most importantly His Son. This Father’s Day, I have hope that when I remember to lead my family to do these things, God’s own reflection will shine through them into the world.
I see rainbows.
