Frank and to the Point

Last week a tanker carrying 8,600 gallons of gasoline was involved in a one-vehicle accident on the San Francisco-Oakland Bridge just outside of San Francisco. The heat from the flames melted a part of the bridge causing it to col-lapse. The bridge will be closed for months while architects, structural engineers, and construction teams go to work in an effort to repair the damage.

It is estimated that as many as 280,000 commuters take that bridge into San Francisco every day. The alternative route will add miles and precious time to the average commute. With rising gas prices, crowded interstates, and longer drive-times than most of us can imagine for people going to and from work, the bridge closure will be an incredible in-convenience for our California friends.

It takes a long time to build a bridge. It takes only a moment to destroy one. In a heated moment, angry words can wreck a friendship. Misguided actions can destroy a reputation. One careless action can undo years of careful ministry groundwork laid by a previous generation of Christians. We must be careful to live our faith Christianly. That’s probably what the prophet meant when he said, “He has shown you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)

First Baptist Nashville is building bridges with people in our city and in places all around the world this year. We do this as we serve our community, love our neighbors, give our financial gifts, gather in worship, pray for our city, and live out our faith every moment of every day. I’ll see you Sunday as we keep the bridges open!
