Blessings of a Godly Mother
PUBLISHED IN THE EVANGEL // May 7, 2007by Frances Carson, FBC member
My family was so blessed to have had a godly mother. A friend once told me it was hard for her to learn to trust the Lord in all things because she was not raised in a Christian home. Learning to trust wasn’t as easy as she seemed to think, but it was the rule in our home. Whenever any decision had to be made, the first thing we did was pray for guidance from the Lord.
Mother was widowed at a young age. She had three children under the age of ten. Mother had never worked except at home and she had no insurance to fall back on. That didn’t slow her down. She went to the Lord and asked for His guidance and then she went to work. My brothers and I stayed together, were encouraged through school and into college. Mother never complained; she just did the best she could and trusted the Lord. She also introduced all of her children to the Lord.
Her life verses were Philippians 4: 11-13 – Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
She lived those verses throughout her life. Even in the nurs-ing home, she was known as the one who always had a smile on her face.
Mother experienced tough times and she was never wealthy. But she always said she was rich because she had trusted the Lord to take care of her and her family. With a legacy like that, it’s not hard to learn to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” We know where to go in good times or in bad times and we know who holds our future—and all because we had a godly mother.
Editor’s Note: Frances Carson’s mother, Nellie, was a longtime FBC member who went home to be with the Lord last fall at the age of 102.
