Building Bridges

What exactly is the Building Bridges campaign
and what does it have to do with me?

Each week beginning September 10, Pastor Frank Lewis will discuss from the pulpit a specific element of the Building Bridges campaign, including details about what it means for the church and what it means to you as an individual member. The Building Bridges campaign represents our congregational mission challenge and strategic priorities for the next four years. Without you, our church cannot build the bridges needed to reach our goals and spread the truth in our community.

Attend church on the following Sundays to learn more:

GRANDPARENTING: A Blessing and Responsibility

by Henrietta Powell, Family Enrichment Committee member

Gramma, Memom, Grandpa, Papa - regardless of the name, this role is special and meaningful. What fun to share excitement and pleasures! Grandparents also can provide support and understanding in times of sadness and disappointment. The contributions grandparents make to their families are extraordinary and very important.

Grandparenting allows you to do things you haven't done in years - coloring, playing on a swing, splashing in puddles. Here are some other suggestions to enrich your relationship with your grandchild:

» Give a picture of the grandparents to the new baby to hang on or by the baby's bed allowing the young child to begin recognizing these special family members.

» Tape your reading of a story for the preschooler and send the tape and book so the child can follow while listening to the tape. (Be sure to add the *beep* to turn the page!)

» Express interest in the child and activities such as music, dance, sports, drama, science. Whenever possible be personally supportive by attending, sending a note, or calling.

» Purchase and donate a toy or clothing item to the Nashville Baptist Association Toy Store. Share with your grandchild that this donation was given in his/her name to help a less fortunate child. In this way you honor your grandchild and minister to others.

It is important for grandparents to remember that the parents have primary responsibility for the care, decisions, and development of the child. At times it is almost impossible for grandparents to refrain from giving unsolicited opinions. However, for family harmony and unity, it is imperative to remember that these decisions are for the parents to make for their family unit.

Enjoy your time as a grandparent! With a little thought, finesse, and devotion, grandparents can be nurturing role models.

Happy Grandparenting - there is no blessing quite like it!

Editor's Note: Grandparents Day is September 10.

FBC to host AGO Choral Concert

by Mark Edwards, Associate Pastor/Minister of Music

Five years after 9/11, the local chapter of the American Guild of Organists is staging a Choral Concert of Remembrance. Choir members from local churches are forming the choir and the concert will be in our church on Monday, September 11, at 7:30 p.m.

Part of our Building Bridges Campaign involves our church stepping up efforts to connect with our downtown arts community. This concert is one of those events and I hope you will avail yourself of this rare and momentous opportunity.

The concert is free and gives us an opportunity to host folks who don't attend our church. I'll be looking for you.

Habitat for Humanity

by Larry Swift, FBC member

FBC is joining Hermitage Hills United Methodist Church and US Bank in building a house in Providence Park, located between Harding Place and Interstate 24. It will be built on four consecutive weekends beginning September 30 - October 1.

Our church is responsible for the work on four days:

Saturday, October 7
Sunday, October 8
Saturday, October 21
Sunday, October 22

We need 25 - 30 workers for each of these four days (no split shifts). The workdays begin promptly at 7:00 a.m. and wrap up around 4:30 p.m. If you would like to help, sign-ups will begin on Sunday, September 10, in the foyer of the church. If you have questions, please contact Wilburn Honeycutt (swh@honeycuttengineering.com) or Mike White (mike.white@lifeway.com).

In addition to construction workers, we are responsible for providing breakfast, lunch, snacks, and water for all the workers. If you would like to help with foodÑ (purchase, prepare, and/or serve), contact Sherri Greer (sherrigreer@comcast.net) or Angela White (whitex3@bellsouth.net) or stop by the sign-up table on September 10.

Do You Know Where These Folks Are?
