Palm Sunday, March 16, 2008

Hosanna!

Read Luke 19:28-40 and Matthew 21:6-10, 14-16

"Hey! What's all the commotion?" "What's going on?" "Where did all these people come
from?" "What are they looking at?" "Who is that?" "Is that who I think it is?" Have you ever
been part of a scene like that? People are curious. We slow down our cars so we can see what
happened on the side of the road. We stop on the edge of a crowd and try to peer over those in
front of us. Kids ask their dads to lift them up so they can see. And if we see someone famous
or something spectacular we have to ask questions or make comments.

When Jesus entered Jerusalem riding on a donkey colt, a huge crowd appeared and began
spreading their robes on the ground. Others cut branches and spread those on the ground.
People cheered and shouted: "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the
highest heaven!" At the temple complex the children cheered, "Hosanna to the Son of David!"

When the Pharisees asked Jesus to tell the children to be quiet, He said that if the children
were silent, the rocks would cry out!

The girls and boys wanted to shout. This was the One who came in the name of the Lord!

They were excited. This was Jesus! Hosanna!

Questions for your family:

What makes you curious? What gets you excited? What is the most exciting thing for your
family preparing for Easter? What makes you want to shout?

Make an Easter Tree with Your Family

Find a dead branch from a tree or large bush. Paint the branch white if you wish. Fill a large can or other container two-thirds full of plaster-of-paris, fine-grain patching cement, or small rocks, and place
the branch firmly into the mixture. Each day family members can use construction paper to print words
or to draw and cut out something to hang on the tree. The words or pictures might relate to the devotional
reading or might be other things that remind us of Jesus and of Easter (cross, lily, fish, loaf of bread,
cup, shepherd's crook, Bible, and so forth). Or, they might be prayer requests or reminders.
Set a time to gather as a family each day of Holy Week and read the Bible passage and the devotional
thoughts for that day. Talk about the questions and pray together.

Monday, March 17

No!

Read Luke 19:45-47

"Hello, Mom? Bradon just said his first word! Listen...
Bradon, say 'Da-Da.' Say 'Da-Da,' Bradon. Come on, you
can do it. Say 'Da-Da' for Grandma...Well he said it as
plain as anything just a moment ago."

Let's be honest. Your first words as a child were probably
not "Hosanna to the Son of David!" Most likely you
said something close to "Da-Da." Later you learned,
"Ma-Ma." Soon after that you learned, "No!"

Parents seem to use that word a lot. They do so to
protect their children from harm, to keep them from
burning their fingers or getting cut or breaking something
or darting out into traffic or... you know. They may also
say it to correct and help their children to grow and
understand that something is wrong. Hopefully parents
then go on to help their children know what they should
 do instead.

When Jesus went to the temple after the triumphal
entry into Jerusalem, He was like a parent saying, "No!
Stop that!" Men had made the temple a place to do business
and to cheat people--a place to lie and to take
advantage of others. Jesus saw God's children doing
something wrong, something that would hurt them, and
He reminded them what they should be doing instead.

Questions for your family:

When was the last time a parent said "no" to you?

When was the last time you said "no" to a child? Has
God ever said "no" to you? Can you think of something
He wants you to stop doing? Start doing? God wants us
to pray: to listen, to tell Him things and to ask Him
things. What can you pray right now? Listen for His
 answer.

Money

Read Luke 21:1-4 and 22:1-6

Jane was six. She and I were coming out of the grocery store when she asked me to loan her a dollar. When I asked why she needed the money she said, "Please, I want to
buy a cookie from that girl." I gave her a bill and watched as she handed it to a girl
with a dozen large cookies.

As we walked to the car she thanked me for the money and asked if I wanted the
cookie. She explained that she didn't really want it. Naturally I asked, "Well, then why
did you waste that money?" She pointed back toward the girl, and I noticed the small
sign that said the girl was trying to earn money to help a friend who had lost all her
clothes in a fire. Jane said, "Isn't that what we're supposed to do?"

She repaid the dollar as soon as we got home. It wasn't about money; it was about
 sharing God's love.

Two passages in Luke, just a chapter apart, tell two events that occurred during
Jesus' last week in Jerusalem. They tell volumes about people's different attitudes
 toward money. A poor woman gave everything she had in an act of love and worship;
a trusted friend agreed to betray the Lord for a bag of silver.

Questions for your family:

Are you comfortable talking about money? Does your family talk together about
how you will use your family's money? Does giving money to God feel like an act of
worship? Or is it something you do without much thought? How might you use some
part of your family's money to show love to God or to share His love with others?

Wednesday, March 19

Prepare

Read Luke 22:7-13

"Get ready for school!"

"Not now, I have to get
 ready for work." "Wash
 your hands and get ready
 for supper." "Are you ready
 to go?" "Hurry and get
 ready for church." "Are you
 ready for the big game?"
 "Are you ready for this?"

Preparing for school,
 preparing for life, preparing
 for marriage, preparing to
 cook a meal, preparing a
 wall to be painted, even
 preparing for death--we
 know a lot about preparing,
 about getting ready, for a
lot of things. We do it
 every day.

Jesus sent Peter and
 John to prepare for the
 Passover feast that they
 would all share together.
He told them where to go
and what to do. He even
 told them what would
 happen and what they
 should say. Jesus prepared
 them. They obeyed Him
 and prepared for the
 feast.
 Jesus was preparing
for what was to come. He
 would continue to prepare
 by eating a last meal
 with His disciples, by
 sharing important instructions
 with them, by
 spending time with the
Father.

Questions for your family:

How did Jesus prepare
 the disciples? How
 were they to prepare for
 the Passover? Can you
 think of other ways Jesus
 had been preparing the
 disciples for what was to
 come? Are you ready to
 celebrate Easter? What
 are some ways your family
 can prepare?

Passover Thursday, March 20

Eat

Read Luke 22:14-23

A friend keeps telling me that eating
while you watch television is a terrible
idea. He says you don't think about--
 you're not paying attention to--what
you're doing: what or how much you are
eating, or even if you are really hungry.

As often as possible we sit down
together and eat as a family. We always
have. There has never been a television
nearby. We eat. We talk. We pay attention
 to one another. Sometimes we
laugh. Sometimes, literally, we want to
 cry.

Jesus "fervently desired" to eat the
Passover with His disciples one last time
before the trial and crucifixion. He
needed their attention. He talked with
His friends. He taught them. He established
for us the Lord's Supper and
asked them and us to eat it as a way to
remember Him. The broken bread and
the cup became a picture of what was
about to happen--His body broken and
 His blood shed.

Meals are important. We like to eat.
Meals can also be a time to think, to
talk, to laugh, and to pay attention to
one another. The Lord's Supper is
 important--a time to remember Jesus
and to think about all that He did for
 us.

Questions for your family:

Are you able to make time and put
forth the effort it may take to eat
together? What do you like to talk about
around the table? Could your family
 make mealtimes more memorable? Who
usually thanks God and asks for His
blessings when you eat? What could
your family do to remember in a special
way all that Jesus did for us?

Good Friday, March 21

Pray

Read Luke 22:39-46

He did not want to go into the room
and talk to his father. He was nine.
Earlier he had gone into a store. He
had picked up a small toy and looked
at it for a long time. Then he had put
the toy in his pocket. He was going to
leave without paying for the toy. The
man who stopped him worked for the
store and had been standing behind
him the entire time. The man called his
father but his father had not been at
home.

Now the boy stood outside the
door. He did not want to go in. He
wanted to go away and hide.
It was almost time. Jesus may have
wanted to go away. He may have wanted
to hide. He had not done anything
wrong, but He knew what was coming.
He chose to pray. He asked His disciples
to pray and ask God to keep them
from temptation. He asked God if it
were possible to allow Him to avoid
what was coming. But He told God
He would do whatever God wanted
 Him to do.

Questions for your family:

What are some other times you
remember that Jesus prayed? When are
some times you can pray as a family?
God wants you to talk with Him. Can
you pray that you are not tempted to
do wrong? What else can you pray for?

Saturday, March 22

Father!

Read Luke 23:44-49

"Daddy!!!" The scream had not even
ended before I leapt from the bed and raced
down the hall. "A bad dream. A nightmare.
That's all. Let me hold you. You'll be fine."

Probably most of us have been part of a
scene similar to this one--as either the one
calling out, the one called, or someone else
in the family. You know what it's like. You
are surrounded by darkness, perhaps in a
deep sleep. You awake in pain or terror, or
you hear a child call for you in pain or terror.
Instantly you are awake. Frantically you call
 out or instantly you respond.

"It was now about noon, and darkness
came over the whole land until three,
because the sun's light failed." Jesus was in
darkness. The world was in darkness. And as
He breathed His last breath, He called out to
His Father. Surely Jesus wanted His Father.

Surely God wanted to hold His Son, to comfort
Him, to tell Him He would be fine.

Jesus would be fine. But not yet. Now
 He was dead.

Questions for your family:

What frightens you? Are you ever afraid
of the dark? How does it make you feel
when you remember that Jesus is "the light
of the world"? Who do you want when you
are afraid or sick or in pain? What comforts
you? What makes you feel safe? When you
call out to God, the Father, how does He
 respond?

Easter Sunday, March 23

Alive!

Read Luke 24:1-12 and Matthew 28:1-10

I'm a morning person. Most days I am up before daylight.
On the occasional morning when I sleep in, I wake
up to sunshine and think, "How luxurious, how marvelous!
I can't wait to start my day!"

Someone else in my family is not a morning person. She does not talk to anyone. She warns people not to try
to talk to her. She looks serious. She looks scary. She
would prefer that you went away.

People respond differently to mornings. They
 respond differently to different mornings.

The women who went to the tomb must have gone
through the entire range of feelings and emotions: from
sad to afraid to incredulous to amazed to happy to excited
and joyful. Jesus had been dead. Now He was alive!
They ran from the tomb to tell the good news. And as
they ran they met Jesus. His first words after the resurrection?

"Good morning!" (Luke 28:9, HCSB)

Today is a good morning--a great morning! Jesus is
alive! Every morning, every day can now be great
because Jesus is alive!

Questions for your family:

In your family, who has a difficult time with mornings?
Who likes to get up early? What helps you have a
great morning? What makes you feel like you will have a
great day? What things do you do at the start of each
day? Could you stop and thank God that Jesus is alive?

Who Should Be a Servant Warrior?

± Men who need encouragement from someone to keep them involved in both an exercise program and a spiritual discipline.
± Men ready to cultivate a stronger discipline in handling the word of God.
± Men who recognize the need to be stronger leaders.
± Men committed to serving the Lord at home, church, work, and in the community.
± Men who long to reconnect with a sense of adventure.
± Men who want to be victorious in the face of spiritual warfare.
± Men who long to build deeper friendships with other men.
± Men who are ready to get in shape – spiritually and physically.

For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
1 Timothy 4:8

What is it?

Servant Warriors is a unique physical and spiritual fitness plan developed by our Pastor for the men of First Baptist Nashville.

When will we meet?

Sunday afternoons 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. (during SMART and Sunday Night Discipleship)

Who can participate?

Any man wanting to strengthen mind, body, and spirit!

What will we do?

By using a low-impact, aerobic exercise routine balanced with stretches, we are going to tone our core (abs), upper and lower arms, shoulders, thighs, and calves in a 45-minute physical workout using a wooden samurai sword called the bokken.

But I don’t own a sword.

Your registration fee covers the cost of your bokken (wooden sword) and all the notebook materials that you will use in our first semester.

What about the Spiritual part of this?

Following each workout session, we will learn how to apply a passage of scripture to our lives that will help tone the spiritual core of each man willing to serve his family, church, and community and live victoriously in the midst of the spiritual battles every man faces.

Do I need to be an athlete to participate?

No! You only need to possess a desire to be more responsible for your physical and spiritual health.

Will there be any homework?

No. But you will be working on your private devotional life. You will also be able to use the Servant Warrior Workout as a supplement to your existing exercise routines or begin using it as a total body workout if you are not currently exercising. The pace set will be up to each individual.

What are the expectations?

Be in class, ready to begin, at 5:00 sharp. We will not wait on stragglers!

Fight the good fight of faith.
1 Timothy 6:12

What can I expect to gain physically?

All the benefits of an exercise routine including: lower stress levels, a better night’s sleep, the fun of learning something new and completely different with a group of other beginners, and the renewed sense of adventure that only comes from welding a sword!

What can I expect to gain spiritually?

You will be equipped to win the battles men face, you’ll learn the principles that servant warriors live by, and you will discover a new Bible study method that will rekindle the fire in your devotional life.

How long will the course last?

Depending on your response, we can continue to add both challenging exercise routines and meaningful Bible study to extend Servant Warriors for several semesters. Your Pastor is committed to lead the men of First Baptist Nashville in physical and spiritual fitness for as long as they are willing to participate!

What to wear, what to bring?

Each session will involve a physical workout. Wear a good pair of cross-training shoes along with your workout clothes (gym shorts, a t-shirt, etc.). Bring your Bible. You will receive a sword (wooden bokken) at the first class along with your Servant Warrior Notebook. You will bring these to class each week.

If one were to say in a word what the condition of a samurai is, its basis lies first in seriously devoting one’s body and soul to his master.
Yamamoto Tsunetomo, Hagakure, the Book of the Samurai

Why Do I Need to Register?

We need to order enough swords for each participant. Please pre-register to help us make sure that we have a sword for you.

How to Register?

Call 664-6010 and let us know you’re coming. It’s that easy.

We will collect the registration fee of $25 on the first night of class. This covers your bokken, your Servant Warrior Notebook, and other materials related to the course.

First Baptist invites all children ages 4 (as of October 1, 2006) through grade 6 to join us for lots of excitement and great challenges. Put on your game face and hit the playing field as you find out what it really means to be a hero! Game Day Central is a unique experience that will challenge our athletes (a.k.a. kids) and teach them how to be true heroes. Bible stories, music, crafts, recreation, and snacks are all combined to provide kids with an adventure-filled week designed especially for them. Along the way, athletes will test their limits on the playing field and learn what makes someone a real hero.

We are happy to offer this remarkable adventure to our children and their friends. We have trained an excellent group of Coaches (teachers, that is!) for the big game. Each day the athletes (grades 1-6) will begin to gather in the Rec Center at 8:45am before going to the Bible Study Locker Room at 9:00am. The preschool athletes (fours & fives) will go directly to their classrooms to begin the game. For extra fun, there will be a special daily emphasis.

VBS Plus

There is still more fun planned with VBS Plus, which begins at noon Monday - Friday with lunch brought from home. After lunch we will gather at the Recreation Center to begin our sports activities with the Infinity Sports team. Infinity Sports operates in a covenant relationship with Great Commission Christian organizations to mobilize Christian sports resources, Christian sportsmen and sportswomen, into closed and restricted access locations for the purpose of evangelism and church planting among Unreached People Groups and Major Gateway Cities. The cost will be $50 per child ($25 each additional child, same family). This includes 5 days of sports classes, t-shirt, group picture and snack.

PLEASE be sure to "sign" the bottom of the registration with your full name to give your child permission to participate in the off-church-premises activities.

Palm Sunday, April 1

The Shout of the Crowd

Matthew 27:20-23

“Shut up!” “Stop it!” “Get out!”

When kids in a family shout these words to each other, the harsh words convey a chilling purpose and are delivered with a heated tone. Injured feelings can quickly elevate and sour, especially in a group setting.

Let’s take those elements to the crowd scene around Jesus during His trial. Imagine the static in the air and the tension in the crowd when people started yelling, “Crucify Him!” First just one or two probably raised the cry, followed by those immediately surrounding them. In a few moments, an impassioned crowd was screaming an order of hate and annihilation. They wanted Jesus dead, and they were not to be reasoned with. A yelling crowd is not usually a thinking crowd.

Crowd sentiments take on a life of their own. But the deafening sound of voices from the crowd had to be followed by a haunting silence when the crowd dispersed. The people suddenly became individuals who had made a decision as a mass. Now they had to deal with their own thoughts and worries alone.

Families with children: Discuss: Has a group ever pressured you to do something wrong? How did you respond to their pressure? How do you think that group was like the crowd who became angry at Jesus?

Families with teenagers and adults: Discuss: As a Christian, what responsibility do you have to help right social injustices? What will you do the next time you see a person or group wrongly accused?

The Sound of Weeping

Luke 23:27-28

by Elizabeth Rogers

“A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him. But Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children’” (Luke 23:27-28).
Perhaps the women following Jesus with this emotional display were just part of the public spectacle that formed around Jesus’ crucifixion. Did they understand the meaning of Jesus walking to His death, or were they so consumed by their own sorrow that they couldn't see the bigger picture?

Here is Jesus, carrying His own cross toward His death on Golgotha, and He pauses to address these women who are overwhelmed with the horror of His crucifixion. But instead of thanking them for their concern, He tells them that their weeping is misplaced. “I’m just doing what I was sent here to do,” He seems to be saying, “but you need to cry tears for your own failings and sins so you can understand why my death is necessary.”

Here we are in Holy Week. Have we wept, literally or figuratively, over Jesus’ suffering and death? And did we first, as Jesus instructed here, weep over our own condition, so we can fully embrace our need for Christ? If we do so, God’s joy and comfort will meet us. “Weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning” (Psalm 30:5).

Families with children: Discuss: Have you ever done something that was so wrong that you cried about it afterward? Let's talk about it.

Families with teenagers and adults: Discuss: Have you seen a movie that depicted Jesus' crucifixion? Did you cry while watching it? Why or why not?

The Crowing of the Rooster

Luke 22:60-62

by Melody Hart-Schrecker

Peter, one of Jesus’ chosen disciples and dearest friends, told Jesus, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.” Jesus answered him, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

The time came for Jesus to be arrested. When someone associated Peter with Jesus, he first panicked and said, “I don’t know him.” Later, twice when he was accused of being a follower of Jesus, he denied the truth: “I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately afterward, the rooster crowed. The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered Jesus’ words to him. He went outside and cried bitterly. Can you imagine Peter’s shame when he heard the rooster’s crowing? He had just denied God’s Son, his dear friend and leader, after telling Him he would lay down his life for him (John 13:37).

How could Peter ever hear the sound of a rooster again without thinking of the pain he saw in Jesus’ eyes?

Of course Jesus knows we are not perfect, and that is exactly why He was living out God’s plan. His dear friend Peter could not be saved without Christ’s sacrifice. As Christians we must believe the Truth, the Bible, and never deny our Lord and Savior, Jesus, who suffered severely for us-even when we hear others reject Him.

Families with children: Discuss: Have you ever heard a rooster crow? When do you hear it, and what does it mean? When you do something that hurts Jesus, what should you do?

Families with teenagers and adults: Discuss: What did the sound of the rooster crowing mean to Peter? to Jesus? How can a sound of despair be turned into a sound of joy?

The Clatter of Coins

Matthew 27:3-5

by David and Becky Clay

The sound of money seldom is heard anymore. Salary is paid by direct deposit. Bills are paid electronically. Debit cards, credit cards, and written checks don't leave a ringing in your ears. Pay phones have been replaced by mobile phones, and even some vending machines take plastic now.

Oh, but you know the sound money can make. Maybe you, your children, or your grandchildren still have a piggy bank. It makes a happy cling, clang, and sometimes a thump (if you’re lucky enough to drop a coin on paper money).

Judas knew the happy sound too. He held the purse for Jesus and the disciples. Can you see him collecting donations, and can you hear the coins as they fall into the bag? Can you picture the joy on his face?

How different was the last sound of money that Judas heard-the “sad” sound-the clatter of coins tossed and scattered into the temple. Judas set in motion the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus. Regret was his reward. He learned that money was nothing. His actions were everything.

Whether money issues from the politician who accepts a bribe or the church member who faithfully tithes, the sound you always hear is choice rather than money. You can hear the happy and the sad. Yes, money seldom is heard anymore, but decisions to gain it or spend it still speak volumes about your character.

Families with children: Discuss the noise money makes when it is dropped in a piggy bank. Discuss the feeling you have when you put money in the collection plate at church. Why do we give God money?

Families with teenagers and adults: Discuss the difference between money earned (from babysitting, jobs, etc.) and money given to you (for birthday, Christmas, etc.) With which type of money are you more careful? Why?

The Splash of Water

Matthew 27:24

by Brenda Harris

Water usually has a calming effect: picturesque beaches at sunset, waterfalls trickling down a mountainside, crystal-clear lakes that glisten like diamonds. But the sound of water doesn’t always denote happy, tranquil times.

Pilate, the Roman governor, reluctantly presided over Jesus’ trial. At first he declared, “I find nothing wrong with this man!” (Luke 23:4 NLT) and sent Jesus to Herod Antipas. But when Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate, the governor succumbed to the pressure of the angry mob.
Pilate saw that he wasn’t getting anywhere and that a riot was developing. So he sent for a bowl of water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. The responsibility is yours!” (Matt. 27:24 NLT.)

The sound of splashing water that day was Pilate’s feeble attempt to rid himself of responsibility and guilt. His cowardly decision sent Jesus straight into the hands of vicious soldiers, who flogged Him and beat Him mercilessly. Today, centuries later, we remember Pilate for this one, spineless act.

Consider the sound of splashing water today-such as the water fountain at school or the washing machine in your home. Let these simple sounds remind you of the potential impact of even the smallest deeds. Determine to make wise choices that honor God.

Families with children: Think about favorite water experiences (swimming, taking a bath, splashing in a puddle.) Discuss how water can also be harmful (splashing water in someone’s face, etc.) Thank God for water and ask Him to help you use it in positive ways.

Families with teenagers and adults: Discuss the benefits of hand washing. Remind family members that Pilate’s hand washing was an attempt to erase his guilt for giving in to the mob. Every time you wash your hands today, think about your responsibility to stand firm in your commitment to Christ, regardless of what the crowd thinks.

The Rattle of Dice

Matthew 27:35-36

by Tony Rankin

If you listened carefully, you could hear it. Rattle, rattle, rattle. Then one person celebrated and others sighed in disappointment. Amidst the fury of the crowds yelling and Jesus dying in pain, some of the executioners huddled near the cross and rolled the dice to see who would win Jesus’ prized robe.

The wrongful excitement of cheap gambling at the foot of the cross stood in stark contrast to the Savior’s agonizing sacrifice for the world. Making bets and gaming were just other ways to make fun of Jesus and indications that these guys had no idea what they were really saying. What a waste!

In our crazy world we sound no different. Maybe we don’t stand in our church or at home and bet to win Jesus’ clothes, but we do make other bad choices. In the boredom and mundaneness of our little worlds, we take all kinds of risky, high-stakes chances to find happiness. In a hectic world of busy schedules, high expectations and demands, imagined boredom, and disappointments, we look for entertainment. We seek the rush of anything that would make us feel better.

Can’t you just hear Jesus say to the gamblers at the foot of the cross and to us as we search for fun outside of Christ: “Father, forgive them because they do not know what they are doing?”

Families with children: Discuss: What is one thing our family could do that would make Jesus happy? Discuss: What is something we could do differently this Easter that would help us understand what Jesus did for us when He died on the cross?

Families with teenagers and adults: Discuss: What makes us take chances in life? Are we bored, or do we just enjoy the risks? How does Jesus feel about our choices?

The Cry of Victory

John 19:28-30

by Melody McCoy

Mercifully, reality TV hasn’t yet given us a show called “The World’s Most Painful Death.” But Christians know there could never be a more excruciating death than the one Jesus experienced on the cross. Not only does a crucifixion involve humiliation, torture, and blood; Jesus Christ was voluntarily taking on Himself the sins of every person in the world—past, present, and future—who would bow to Him as the Son of God and live for Him.

Imagine you were in the position of dying because of your own sins. You would pay in pain for every word you’ve spoken in anger, jealousy, and a false sense of superiority; every wrong thought you’ve ever had; and every gesture of abuse, large or small, you’ve committed against any of God’s creatures. How agonizing would your death be?

But in an act of supreme love and grace, Jesus spared you from that torment. From the cross where He hung for hours and paid the price of your sins and those of multiplied other Christians, He bowed His head and cried, It is finished! (v. 30). He died with the cry of victory and fulfillment on his lips.

And what is our response? If we are at last honest with God, we will echo the words of the hardened Roman centurion who watched Jesus’ slow, painful death: When the centurion, who was standing opposite Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, “This man really was God’s Son!” (Mark 15:39.)

Families with children: Discuss the commitments involved in building a winning team—practices, long hours, teamwork, etc.—and what winning really means.

Families with teenagers and adults: Discuss the ways people may abandon their commitments easily versus what living for Christ involves, including the rewards.

Easter Sunday, April 8

The Thud of the Stone

Matthew 28:1-6

by Melody McCoy

A joyful Easter to you!

There’s plenty of drama and excitement in Matthew’s account of the Resurrection: sorrowful mourners visiting Jesus’ tomb, a violent earthquake, the descent from heaven of an angel whose appearance was like lightning, and steely guards who cowered in fear at the sight of the Lord’s messenger.

The angel’s first act on approaching Christ’s tomb was to roll back the massive stone that had sealed the burial place. The thud of the boulder’s movement gave way to the proclamation of the truth: No power on earth could hold Jesus in death. He is alive! He has been resurrected, just as He said (v. 6). And thus Christ paved the way for believers’ eternal life as well.

And what does the removal of the stone doorway mean to you? What painful memory or event have you buried deeply, sealing the entrance against a sense of loss or grief? Trust Jesus, the Man of Sorrows, who once and for all flung open the door to new life. Let’s celebrate Christ’s resurrection together!

Families with children: Pick up or roll stones in varying sizes, beginning with a pebble and ending with a boulder too heavy to move. Point out that the huge stone sealing Christ’s tomb could only be dislodged by the angel.

Families with teenagers and adults: Recall the death of a friend or family member. If the person was a Christian, discuss the fact that you will see him or her again, thanks to Jesus’ death and resurrection.
