“How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:103-105).
There's nothing quite like a walk in the woods. Meandering down the trail amongst the trees and the sounds of the forest, it's easy to get lost in the vastness and beauty of nature. Surrounded by wilderness, it would be easy to get distracted and find ourselves in an unfamiliar setting with no landmarks or familiar sights to help us find the trail again. Luckily, there are often blazes and other markers that let us know where the trail is, even if it takes us a while to find them.
This situation holds true as we walk down the path of life as well. The world is our forest, offering up its sights and sounds, drawing us away from the trail that God has laid out before us. With so many things pulling at us, it is easy to lose sight of the way and venture off into uncharted forest. God is watching out for us, though. Much like the blazes that mark the trail, He has provided us with the guidepost for our lives: His Word.
As the psalmist wrote, God's Word is a "lamp" and a "light" for us, showing us the way and helping us not to stumble. Like the star that led the Magi on their journey, the Word of God leads us on a journey of our own. By following it, we will not lose the path but rather find ourselves in "the peace of God, which transcends all understanding" (Phil. 4:7), right where He wants us.
