2008 Advent Devotional Guide

Activities for Families with Preschoolers

  1. Allow your preschooler to help you tell the story of the Christmas using a family nativity set. Place the people from a nativity scene in a bag and allow your preschooler to pick them out one at a time. As he or she selects a person, encourage your child to tell you what part that person played in the biblical account of Christmas. If your child does not know a particular answer, share that answer with him or her. Continue this activity until all the people have been placed.
  2. To help your child make an early connection between Christmas and serving others, allow him or her to help you make some cookies for your neighbors or church members who may not be able to get out much. Take your preschooler with you when you deliver the cookies. Encourage your recipients to share some of their fondest Christmas memories with you and your child.
  3. To celebrate the true meaning of Christmas, encourage your preschooler to help you plan a family "birthday for Jesus" party. Decide together what kind of cake or snacks to make for the party. Emphasize that there won't be any gifts involved but that you want to spend a few moments thanking Jesus for coming to earth for us.
  4. If your child enjoys drawing, work with him or her to create some homemade Christmas cards that communicate the biblical truth of Christmas. Allow your preschooler to help create a list of those who will receive the cards he or she makes. Use this activity as an opportunity to remind your child that Jesus should be the focus on Christmas.
